Description
This Monmouth Cap is hand-knitted and felted by me with 65% wool and 35% alpaca – the colour is a dull plum brown.
It has a Dorset Button* at the crown and is approx 22/24″ in circumference – to fit an average man’s head.It has a double thickness brim that can be worn down or folded up and a loop at the back.
Monmouth caps were worn by sailors, soldiers and men doing outdoor work from the 15th to the late 18th centuries. Traditionally they are hand-knitted with coarse wool which will offer warmth and weather protection. They sometimes have a button and also a loop for hanging-up when not in use.
*A Dorset button is a style of hand-made button originating in the English county of Dorset. Their manufacture was at a peak between 1622 and 1850, after which they were overtaken by machine-made buttons from factories in the developing industries of Birmingham and other growing cities.
